A Letter from the University Chancellor

Dear Colleagues,

One of my greatest pleasures as University Chancellor of the University of Chicago is the opportunity I have every year to recognize individuals who make our University the preeminent institution that it is. The dedication of every faculty and staff member to the mission of the University is essential to fulfilling our highest aspirations.

Our staff community, in particular, plays an instrumental role in providing expertise and support in all facets of the University’s operations. These contributions are critical to our collective work.

Our University is distinguished by a culture that supports open, rigorous, and intense inquiry as the highest value. Intellectual freedom is essential to this atmosphere of open inquiry, and that means we have been and must continue to be open to all people and all perspectives that can stand the scrutiny of argument. Our staff members make up part of our rich mosaic of people, perspectives, and inspiring ideas. They are dedicated to the University of Chicago precisely because they believe in its mission of discovery, learning, and impact.

The individuals we are recognizing today have clearly demonstrated their commitment to the University, their colleagues, and the many communities of which we are part. I want to thank our staff for their many years of service, and for contributing to the University of Chicago as a place that has an extraordinary impact on the world.
